BHP & Torque - But what do they mean?
You would have seen the above terms in every spec sheet of a Vehicle. Does it sound too technical if you are not a grease-monkey kind of a guy? Our intention is to make things simple and try to give more clarity.

Torque is the force or energy or in simple terms the capacity of an engine to produce power. Torque is expressed in terms of Newton Meters (NM). Torque produced in a vehicle depends upon the RPM (Revolutions per minute) of the engine i.e., the speed with which the piston movements get converted as revolutions per minute in the crank shaft. Torque is the energy generated by the crankshaft. The more Torque results in more load pulling ability. An engine which produces more Torque with lesser RPMs means it is more efficient. So, when you see the spec-sheet of a Vehicle (which reads like for eg.173Nm @4000 rpm) now, you know what it actually means.
BHP (Brake Horsepower) is how the energy or power produced by the engine of a vehicle is utilized. In other words, the speed with which the torque produced is converted into acceleration and top speed. More RPMs in an engine means more BHP and more top speed. A spec-sheet which reads 138bhp @ 6400rpm will surely make sense for you now as it can be used for comparing the performances of identical/competitive vehicles.
So, now the final question, should I choose a vehicle with more Torque or BHP? Which one is ideal for me?
The answer depends on what is your requirement. If you are thrilled by quick acceleration and high top speed performance, you should opt for the ones with higher BHP on the spec-sheet. On the other hand, you are the one looking for relaxed cruising and more load pulling requirements, you should go for the vehicle with more Torque.
